Moving Lives Forward
Metropolitan Family Service promotes equity, helps people gain prosperity, and builds a connected community for all ages across the greater Portland area.
What We Do
For more than 75 years, MFS has worked alongside individuals, families, and community partners to build healthier, more equitable communities.
MFS understands that challenges including poverty, housing instability, hunger, social isolation, and limited access to education or employment are deeply connected. That is why we provide comprehensive, person-centered services that support the whole person, the whole family, and the whole community.
Our three core service areas - early childhood and youth success, economic well-being, and community health and wellness - help more than 24,000 children, families, and older adults each year.
Our Values
This past year, we served over 24,000 individuals of all ages and backgrounds.
Equity
75% of MFS participants identify as BIPOC. 48% speak a language other than English at home.
Prosperity
95% of those MFS serves are extremely low-income.
Connection
95% of participants reported that MFS staff share their culture or have taken time to understand their community and what is important to them.
Rising costs, economic uncertainty, and persistent inequities create significant barriers to stability, particularly for historically underserved communities. The people MFS serves reflect the depth of these challenges and the resilience they demonstrate as they work toward greater stability and well-being. We need your help more than ever!
Last year we:
Processed free tax returns, at over 12 volunteer tax sites.
Served school-age youth at 21 local public schools.
Supported parents and caregivers through early childhood and family programs at 5 schools.
Distributed food weekly at 5 food pantries in 3 school districts.
Provided rides to support health, access, and social connection for over 1,000 older adults.
