Experience Corps
MFS AARP Foundation Experience Corps is an intergenerational volunteer tutoring program that engages adults 50 and older to work 1:1 with students to help them reach critical literacy benchmarks by the third grade. At EC school sites across metro Portland, findings show significant gains in reading and classroom behavior.
AARP Foundation Experience Corps is a national program (housed locally at Metropolitan Family Service) which taps into the experience and passion of adults aged 50 and over to ensure that every child has a chance to succeed in school and in life. The program employs a structured, evidence-based model that improves the overall reading ability of students by building their fluency, accuracy and comprehension skills. Tutors receive at least 20 hours of training annually, including 16 hours of pre-service training. In-person structured tutoring sessions take place in one-to-one settings, with two 30-minute tutoring sessions a week throughout the school year.
The intergenerational relationships the tutors build with their students is at the heart of the program benefiting students, tutors and the school community. Students become great readers, they are supported in developing social emotional skills, and have an adult in their lives that is there to support them. Experience Corps significantly contributes to lifelong success of students and satisfaction and sense of purpose for the tutors.

“An Experience Corps mentor worked with a student who was a reluctant reader and disengaged with school. She continued to work on building the student's self-esteem and identity as a reader. Now the student is engaged in school, is joyous to attend her classes and sessions, and IS a reader!"
