MFS Older Adult & Intergenerational Services

Our programs promote the health, wellbeing, social connections and independence of older adults and people with disabilities.  We deliver services that increase health and community access, engage the wisdom and life experience of older adults, and strengthen intergenerational connections. We value and engage volunteers in a variety of opportunities that support our mission and services.

PROJECT LINKAGE

MFS Project Linkage provides services to older adults and people with disabilities through our Project Linkage program, offering transportation, community connection and services supporting independence to over 1000 low-income, isolated participants each year.

We value community and believe that it is strengthened by a caring exchange, engaged volunteers and resources that respond to the unmet needs of seniors and disabled people, promoting their safety, dignity and independence.

"You people all do such wonderful work. I will be turning 80 soon, and I have been on these trips before, and I just want to say gosh, I am getting goosebumps just thinking about this what you do there is medicine. Getting us out and letting us see the world, it makes such a difference to our moods, and to our spirits. Thank you!"

EXPERIENCE CORPS

AARP Foundation Experience Corps is a national program (housed locally at Metropolitan Family Service) which taps into the experience and passion of adults age 50 and over to ensure that every child has a chance to succeed in school and in life.

Our intergenerational volunteer tutoring program engages adults 50 and older to work 1:1 with students to help them reach critical literacy benchmarks by the third grade. At EC school sites across metro Portland and Gresham, findings show significant gains in reading and classroom behavior

WANT TO VOLUNTEER?

We’re looking for tutors.

“One of my introverted students who struggles with self-confidence told me that her time reading with [MFS EC Tutor] Terrie is her favorite part of the week. Terrie helps make every child feel seen and heard.”

Leo Soell, 5th grade teacher at Hall Elementary School

“I am a widow of 7 years and don't have family near me. So, I look forward to the group just to be able to talk with older (like me) people. And along with that I get to know my computer and Chromebook better. I was asked to co-host the group and it has been an honor. I didn’t think I could do it but I am doing it and learning at the same time.”

HOLIDAY CHEER

Holiday Cheer is a special seasonal program! This year, with the help of committed volunteers, MFS Project Linkage will again be assembling and delivering 150 gift bags to isolated older adults and people experiencing disability who live in our community.

This year we will be wrapping presents on December 7th and delivering gift bags between December 11th & 24th.  You can volunteer to wrap or deliver the gifts. As a delivery volunteer you will pick up bags at our NE office and schedule the delivery with each person you deliver to, so you can be assured that deliveries will take place during a time that works well for you. The biggest gift of Holiday Cheer isn’t within the gift bags; it’s in the time spent with the recipients of the gift bags. Many visits take up to an hour as you might be the only person visiting this Holiday Season. This is a great opportunity to do with family or individually.
