About MFS

Metropolitan Family Service helps people move beyond the limitations of poverty, inequity, and social isolation.

We embrace innovation to create sustainable solutions that address disparities, promote equity, and demonstrate respect for all individuals.

Moving Lives Forward

Since 1950, we have collaborated with key community partners from education, healthcare, business and government to create opportunities that change lives and make communities stronger. We are dedicated to supporting individuals of all ages, from children to older adults, to achieve their full potential.

At our organization, we tackle complex challenges by actively listening and engaging with diverse perspectives to understand and meet the needs of the community. In all that we do, we honor the inherent strength of intergenerational, multicultural communities.

Leading the team

OUR CEO Judy Strand

Judy Strand, CEO, is a committed social service practitioner who started her career in direct clinical social work in community mental health. For 18 years, Judy led an innovative interdisciplinary team dedicated to support for older people lacking access to care. Since joining MFS in 2005, Judy has focused her efforts on building a strong culturally responsive multi-service organization that draws wisdom from within community to inform practice and advocacy efforts.

Judy co-chairs the All Hands Raised Partnership Council, Portland, Oregon, and the Multnomah County SUN (Schools Uniting Neighborhoods) Council. She is a member of the EITC + CTC Statewide Coalition to expand access to free tax assistance to low income taxpayers. Judy is an American Leadership Senior Fellow (Oregon - Class of 34). Judy and Jack Strand own Strand Tea Company, a values-oriented company.

“One of the questions I am constantly considering is what is worth striving for out of life?”

“The mission of MFS, “to help people move beyond the limitations of poverty, inequity, and social isolation” is one of the most important things I want to have happen in my life. I am inspired and honored to serve with the MFS community including our board, employees, volunteers and partners in this whole endeavor. It is truly worth striving for!”
