Empowering Taxpayers with Free Tax Prep

We’re honored to share that MFS CASH Oregon was recently featured in OPB for our work providing free, high-quality tax preparation to Oregonians. 🎉

Every year, tax season brings uncertainty and stress, but our volunteers step up to make filing easier and more accessible for thousands of people. In 2024 alone, our dedicated team prepared over 9,100 tax returns, securing $18 million in refunds for hardworking individuals and families.

Volunteer Peter Tkach, left, assists Sheryl L Hirshon with her tax preparation as part of Metropolitan Family Service's Cash Oregon program in Portland, Ore., Mar. 5, 2025. This is Hirshon's third year using the program, which she began using after she retired and taxes got "complicated."

💡 “Just everybody has a story, and they’re so grateful for this service,” says long-time volunteer Andrea Dobson in the OPB article.

MFS CASH Oregon operates as part of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, offering free tax prep to individuals earning under $67,000 a year. Many of our clients are retirees, immigrants, and self-employed individuals who might not otherwise have access to professional tax assistance.

Our volunteers aren’t just tax preparers—they’re advocates for financial stability, ensuring that every taxpayer understands their return and gets the support they need.
